Utilize college level grammar and professional formatting when
completing this worksheet. Submissions without proper formatting, all
required photos or sufficient responses will be rejected.

Pre-lab Questions
1. Research the process of erythropoiesis, and explain the role
erythropoietin plays in the body.
Erythropoiesis is the process by which new red blood cells are
formed, primarily in the bone marrow. This process ensures the
body has enough cells to carry oxygen to tissues. The hormone
erythropoietin, mainly produced by the kidneys, plays a key role
by stimulating the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells,
especially when oxygen levels are low in the blood.

2. Based on your response to Question 1, above, why do you think
erythropoietin is a popular “doping” drug for athletes?
Since erythropoietin increases the number of red blood cells, it
helps deliver more oxygen to muscles during physical activity. This
gives athletes a boost in endurance and performance, which is
why some use it illegally to gain a competitive edge.

3. How would the hemoglobin content differ in a person living in
Philadelphia (Elevation: 39 feet) compared to someone living in
Denver (Elevation: 5280 feet)? Explain your reasoning using the
information you provided in Question 1.
A person living in Denver would likely have higher hemoglobin
levels than someone in Philadelphia. At higher altitudes, there is
less oxygen in the air, so the body produces more erythropoietin
to stimulate red blood cell production and increase oxygen
delivery.

EXPERIMENT 1: CLASSIFICATION OF BONES
Introduction Questions
1. In this experiment, you will investigate the valves utilized by the
heart. What other organs or body systems incorporate valves?
List and describe these, being sure to elaborate on how they are
used. (Hint: Your response should be 4-6 sentences long.) Other
organs and body systems that use valves include the digestive,
urinary, and circulatory systems. In the digestive system, the

pyloric valve controls the movement of food from the stomach to
the small intestine. The urinary system uses valves at the bladder
to control the release of urine and prevent backflow. In the
circulatory system, veins contain valves that help return blood to
the heart by preventing it from flowing backward. The
lymphatic system also uses valves to move lymph fluid in one
direction, assisting with immune responses. These valves all
function to regulate flow and maintain proper pressure within
their respective systems.

Data and Observations
Insert your observations for this experiment in the table below as
detailed by the lab procedure.

Results and Discussion
1. What happened when you pressed on the balloon stretched over
the jar? What does this result represent?
When I pressed the balloon down over the jar, it pushed the
water up through the straw. This movement represents how the
