South African Education System
Assignment 02 2026
The Transformation of Education in
Post-Apartheid South Africa
Introduction
The education system under apartheid in South Africa was intentionally
structured to sustain racial domination and socio-economic inequality. Rather
than functioning as a neutral institution for intellectual development, education
was manipulated as a political instrument to entrench segregation and white
supremacy. Through legislation such as the Bantu Education Act of 1953, the
apartheid government formalised a racially divided system that provided high-
quality education to white learners while systematically underfunding and
restricting opportunities for Black learners. This inequality was not incidental
but deliberate, designed to limit the aspirations and mobility of the majority
population.
