The main character of the story met Penelope Ashton at a dinner party. She wasn’t the most
beautiful girl there, but she was elegant and intelligent. Our guy, found out that she was a
scientist that worked with professor Lumsden at University College in London. By the end of
the night, he brought her to the Victoria Station and they made plans for next Wednesday. On
Wednesday, he met her at the University and had dinner at Soho. During the next six weeks
they hung out. One evening they had dinner at his flat and she invited him to spend a weekend
at her house with her family. They went to Marlow and he met her father George (he was old
but fit and energetic) and her sister Gillian (she wasn’t like her she was made for running a
house). When the girls went to sleep, George asked our character about his job, he was an
economist that helped small business. The only person that concerned the character was
Benson, Ashton’s personal servant.
Penelope had worked a lot that week so she stayed at the University the whole Friday, on
Saturday morning she said to Malcolm that she was very tired, they went to Marlow, but
Malcolm decided not to propose to her that weekend. She had been practising with DNA and
genetic material to try to cure cancer. They spent the weekend softly and on Sunday Gillian
was going to church when she screamed and they saw her running towards them covering her
face. Penelope looked at her and asked her father to bring her to the kitchen and Malcolm to
call 999, she had an acid burn. Benson called Malcolm, he saw footprints of the tires of a car,
they’re waiting for Gillian to attack her. Malcolm calm twice the 999, one for an ambulance
and other for the police. Ashton and Penelope went to the hospital with Gillian. The police
came and we find out that Malcom isn’t an economist, he’s a secret police officer. The attack
may be caused for the enemies that Ashton had, but Penelope didn’t think that his father had
that kind of enemies. The, Ashton wanted to talk with Malcolm, he ordered him to propose to
Penelope that evening and they will go to Australia for a new job. Malcolm, didn’t want to
accept that.
It was Monday and he went to his office, and the boss of his department, Harrison, told him off
for telling the police about his job. So, he said that the police thought of him as a suspect.
Then, he talked with his friend Larry and he asked about George Ashton, his friend knew
nothing about him, so he suggested to look in the computer Nellie. But, when he searched, he
found out that the information about his net to be father-in-law was at level purple (green-
yellow-red-purple) so he desisted. Hi boss called and said that Ogilvie, the head of the
department, wanted to see him. So, he went there and there where Ogilvie and a nameless
man that turned to be his lordship. They wanted Malcolm to be introduced in the family and
inform them about everything, he didn’t want to do that because it was the family he was
going to belong. Finally, he accepted to protect Penelope, and with that, her father; although
he was marrying Penelope, not her father. Nobody knew about the companies of Ashton that
made different plastic, so mister Ashton was frightened, and needed to be protected by
Malcolm, that’s why he offered the job in Australia, to protect his daughter.
When Malcolm came back to Marlow, he talked with Inspector Honnister, now he was part of
the investigation, so he needed to know things about Ashton. He found out that Gillian was
bad, and Ashton had no clue about who could had been the one who threw acid on his
daughter face. Malcolm begged Honnister not to tell anything about his real job to Ashton. The
, Inspector knew about the wedding plans between Malcolm and Penny, because one servant,
probably Benson, wanted to talk about it. The policeman thought that the crime could had
been done by a woman, jealously, or because of an affair. So, they decided to meet at the bar
Coach and Horses between nine and ten o’clock. When he came back, nobody was home. He
talked a few words with Bensons and then Penelope arrived, she was tired and she thought
Gillian was better, but she would have a big shock because of the physical and phycological
trauma, they decided that after dinner they would go to the hospital and Penelope would find
out things about what happened to Gillian to tell the police. Ashton came and revealed
Malcolm that Gillian was blind, none of the girls knew. Malcolm asked George about if Gillian
had an affair and he got very angry. After dinner, Penelope talked to Gillian and they
discovered that when she went back from church, she found a guy leaning in front of his car,
so she thought he had problems, she approached and the man smiled and threw her the acid.
He was more or less forty years old and was pale. The, in the ride home, Malcolm proposed to
Penelope, and she accepted, but she thought that that wasn’t the right moment.
Malcom went to see Ogilvie and requested six man and a lot of telephones to control: George,
Penelope, Gillian and Benson. So, Ogilvie gave him eight of each, taped the phones and gave
him two guns (because Benson and George had one each). In his team was Larry and he talked
to him about the story. The, one man of his team came and said that Penelope was at the
hospital but there was no clue of Ashton and Benson. Before that, they were talking with the
Inspector about the car, because they thought they had found a blue Ford Cortina that could
be the car of the attacker, but now, Gillian couldn’t identify him. She was blind. They went to
the house and found two letters from Ashton, one for Penny and the other for Malcom.
Malcolm opened his and the letter put that he needed to take care of Penny and make her
forget about his father. Malcolm called Penny, she needed to go home now.
Malcolm called Ogilvie and told him about the letter, then he told him that the man should had
gone after going to sleep, so Penny couldn’t tell him about the proposal. Penny came back
from the hospital and cried to Malcom because someone was following her. So, Malcolm led
her to her Dad’s office and she read the letter, that claimed that she needed to marry Malcolm
and she didn’t need to worry about him, because he was with Benson. Then, Malcom told her
the truth about his life, he was working for McCulloh and Ross company, and they were doing
industrial and economical tasks, but for the government. And then she left Malcom’s men
inspect everything. They found very little things, a laboratory and a room with a lock that
Penny didn’t know it existed. Ann also there was a big model railway, that one of his man was
investigating. Benson had been with the family forever, he worked at one of the father’s
companies and when they moved on, he moved to become George’s personal servant.
Malcom went back to the office and talked with Ogilvie, he told him that the Ashton’s case was
still theirs, so Malcolm needed to find him (Credgar wanted to have the case but the judges
didn’t let him), so he needed to see about Ashton’s life. After thinking about it, Ogilvie decided
to let him his password, because all that information was in level Black. Malcolm found out
that he was Russian and very intelligent for his age, so he started doing a lot of physics and
maths. Then during the Second World Wide War, he started to create an atomic bomb like the
one from America. But after the World ended, he didn’t want to do that, so he finally could go
to England, by faking his death in a fire and took another man’s identity and started his new
life. Got a job and had a friend, he married his friend’s daughter and had two kids, then the
woman died. So Credgar wanted to have the case because he was the one who helped him
from escape and thinks that he might be using his intelligence for something, so he likes to
