What are the 3 conditions that establish a VCPR?
-has been retained by the client
-has reach an agreement with the client as to the scope of the services to be provided by the
veterinarian
-has advised the client that services will only be provided in accordance with the standards of practice of
the profession
How does the VCPR differ for companion animals vs herd animals/groups of companion animals?
-with herds/groups of companion animals (shelters/breeders etc) the vet does not need to examine
EVERY ANIMAL on the property BUT should have:
-current ustdg of the level of husbandry practiced on the premises
-current ustdg of the client's abilities with respect to recog symp of dz/admin drugs/tx plans
-devo spec protocols with client to ensure that drugs are used appropriately and safely
What is Marketing? (as defined by Regulation 1093)
The activity of promoting one's services to members of the general public or any segment of the public
eg. public appearances, press releases, directory listings etc.
What is Advertising? (as defined by Regulation 1093)
A mode of marketing that might be defined as any message communicated in any public medium to
promote a member's professional services, goods, practice or image.

What is a Client? (as defined by Regulation 1093)
Someone who uses the professional services of a member regularly and with treasonable frequency,
and who has not requested the transfer of records for his/her animal(s) to another member or
otherwise has had the relationship terminated.
What are the 6 guideline under Regulation 1093 for advertising?
1) factual, verifiable, accurate and comprehensible
2) not false, misleading or deceptive
3) contains no testimonials
4) contains no comparisons to, or claims of superiority over another member's practice or expertise
5) contains no endorsement or promotion of specific products, brands of products, brand-name drugs,
or third-party service providers
6) could not reasonably be regarded by members as likely to demean the integrity or dignity of the
profession or to bring the profession in to disrepute
What is a Conflict of Interest under Regulation 1093?
The private interest of a person conflicting with that person's professional responsibilities - may involve
financial gain recieved in return for completing an activity that conflicts with the individual's
professional activities.
What is Steering under Regulation 1093?
A person is systemically referred or directed to a particular veterinarian or veterinary practice by
another individual or organization - the recommendation is made for a reason other than the best
interests of the animal
What are the 4 tests for defining a Steering relationship?

1) there must be a system (ie structured agreement/ongoing activity or pattern of behaviour)
2) the system must result in clients being directed to a particular vet/vet practice for
professional/ancillary service
3) the vet must knowingly participate in the system in some way
4) there is either a conferral fo some benefit to the referrer OR a restriction on which vets may
participate in the system (beyond reasonable restrictions eg locations/specializations or scope of
practice)
What is Informed Consent?
The process by which the client learns about and understands the purpose, benefits and potential risks
of all recommended activities and uses this information to make decisions concerning their animal's
care.
What are the 8 pieces of information a vet must explain for Informed Consent?
1) the differential and/or definitive diagnoses
2) the nature of the proposed diagnostic procedure(s), intervention(s) or course of treatment
3) the proposed benefits, common side effects, and any serious risks
4) the consequences of the proposed action is refused 5) answers all Qs and makes sure client
understands provided info 6) provides cost range 7) records consent in chart +/- written consent 8)
revealing info regarding another client/pt without their consent is not permitted (unless req by law)

1) obtained from an individual(s) over the age of 18 with the legal authority to grant it
