MATH 100 DEFINITIONS FOR PEARSON TEST

Place value - Answers -determines the value of a digit in a number, based on the
location of the digit.

Factors - Answers -The numbers multiplied together to find a product. EX: 3*6 =18

Estimating - Answers -to form an approximate judgment or opinion regarding the worth,
amount, size, weight, etc., of; calculate approximately:

Consecutive Integers - Answers -An integer is simply a number like 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4,
but unlike whole numbers, integers also include negative numbers like -1, -2, -3 and -4.
An integer cannot be a decimal or a fraction.

Integers - Answers -are the set of whole numbers and their opposites. Whole numbers
greater than zero are called positive integers. Whole numbers less than zero are called
negative integers. The integer zero is neither positive nor negative, and has no sign.

Scientific Notation - Answers -a method for expressing a given quantity as a number
having significant digits necessary for a specified degree of accuracy, multiplied by 10
to the appropriate power, as 1385.62 written as 1.386 × 10 3.

Rounding - Answers -replacing a number with a number that tells about how many or
how much.

Consecutive Integers - Answers -An integer is simply a number like 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4,
but unlike whole numbers, integers also include negative numbers like -1, -2, -3 and -4.
An integer cannot be a decimal or a fraction.

Lattice Multiplication - Answers -is a method of multiplying large numbers using a grid.
This method breaks the multiplication process into smaller steps, which some students
find easier. Digits to be carried are written within the grid, making them harder to miss.

Rational Numbers - Answers -is any number that can be expressed as the quotient or
fraction p/q of two integers, p and q, with the denominator q not equal to zero.

Exponents - Answers -A number placed above and to the right of another number to
show that it has been raised to a power. For example, 32 indicates that 3 has been
raised to a power of 2, or multiplied by itself; 32 is equal to 9.

Prime Factorization - Answers -A Prime Number can be divided evenly only by 1 or
itself.

Greatest Common Factor - Answers -is the greatest factor that divides two numbers.

, Inequalities - Answers -a number sentence that uses the greater than sign (>) or the
less than sign (<) to show that two expressions do not have the same value.

two or more numbers. Example: the Least Common Multiple of 3 and 5 is 15, because
15 is a multiple of 3

1/3 = 0.33 = 33%
¼ = 0.25 = 25%
1/5 = 0.20 20%

Core Fractions - Answers -Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part
when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity
formed by a parts of size 1/b.

Number Lines - Answers -is a straight line with a "zero" point in the middle, with
positive and negative numbers listed on either side of zero and going on indefinitely. An
example of a number line is what a math student can use to find the answer to addition
and subtraction questions.

Fractions to Decimals - Answers -You can convert all fractions to decimals. The
decimal forms of rational numbers either end or repeat a pattern. To convert fractions to
decimals you just divide the top by the bottom — divide the numerator by the
denominator — and if the division doesn't come out evenly, you can stop after a certain
number of decimal places and round off.
3/4 becomes 4

Word Problems - Answers -a problem is presented as text, usually in scenario
