Case Study- The Issue Of Assessing Quality Health Care Arnold Palmer Hospital
The Culture of Quality at Arnold Palmer Hospital Discussion Questions 1. Why is it important for Arnold Palmer Hospital to get a patient’s assessment of health care quality? Does the patient have the expertise to judge the health care she or he receives? It is very important for a Hospital that performs at a caliber such as Arnold Palmer to have top reviews from patients. The faster that Arnold Palmer Hospital can get the assessments back from patients they can take the necessary steps to correct any flaws they have in their system. Managing quality at Arnold Palmer Hospital will help them build strategies of cost reduction and better response times also it will help them be different from other hospitals. There are two ways that quality can improve profitability, first off improved quality at Arnold Palmer Hospital would give them a better reputation thus leading to more sales and high traffic of patients. This could ultimately give them more flexibility when it comes to pricing. Also increased quality would also mean that there would be less rework and scrap costs to have patients readmitted, which would in turn mean higher productivity and money saved on wasted costs. Arnold Palmer Hospital has good total quality management (TQM) because they make sure that all employees of the hospital from janitorial staff to nurses know that they patient comes first. Secondly over 7 million children, women and their families are been admitted or been involved with Arnold Palmer Hospital, so I would say that because many of these patients are severe or intensive cases they could have experience with other hospitals and healthcare professionals. So using prior knowledge and experiences from other hospitals it would be fair for the patient to judge the health care that she or he is receiving at Arnold Palmer Hospital. Even if they are a brand new patient to the hospital or have never been to a hospital before the patient should always have the right to feel comfortable and well taken care of when in a hospital so in my opinion the patient does have the expertise to judge the healthcare that they receive. 2. How would you build a culture of quality in an organization, such as Arnold Palmer Hospital? Arnold Palmer Hospital was founded in 1989 and in the United States of American it is one of the largest hospitals for children and women. Arnold Palmer Hospital already has a large aim towards quality and that’s what they base their culture and environment on. Although not everyone is perfect so for new employees or for employees that need a reminded I would suggest, first teaching it to the staff. By this I mean explain in detail what we are looking for, and how to aim to meet the goal of culture in the organization. For Arnold Palmer Hospital since the culture goal is quality I would teach and remind staff at every point that the patient comes first and drill that concept into the staff at the hospital. Secondly I would define it let the staff know how and to what extent what we are pushing towards the quality culture at Arnold Palmer Hospital. Next I would give the staff on the job training to let them live it, so they get experience on the level on quality we want the staff to have at the hospital. Next step of building culture at an organization such as Arnold Palmer Hospital would be to measure it, measure the results from the assessments sent to patients see how well the hospital is doing against other hospitals and
