The Ministry of the Housing and Spatial Planning
plans to solve the shortage in student
accommodations in The Netherlands
Since the shortage in student housing is an increasing concern in The Netherlands, the
ministry of the Housing and Spatial Planning implemented a policy on renovating vacant
government buildings into student accommodations. The policy will go into effect at the end
of January 2023 and it will lead to an increase in student accommodations over the course of
5 years.
Effects on students
The issue of the shortage in student housing has a
negative effect on students. With more than 27.000
students currently looking for a living space, and
this number increasing every year, the shortage is
expanding. This makes travel times longer for
students, makes them less independent, and it
increases rent all over the Netherlands making the
houses that are available unaffordable.
Effect on the housing market
The policy will go into effect at the end of January 2023. There are a
few steps that every empty office or empty office building goes
through, before it is ready for students to live in the transformed
buildings. Therefore, the first houses are estimated to be ready at the
end of 2023. It is expected that at least 8000 new student houses can
be built with this plan. This is part of a larger plan that the ministry
announced earlier this year to build 60.000 new houses over the
course of 8 years.
According to Hugo de Jonge, minister of housing and spatial planning, more information
about the locations of the new student houses and the application process will follow soon.
The ministry created a website where you can find more information, like an FAQ, and where
updates will be posted: rijksoverheid.nl/actieplanstudentenwoningen.
