How does Dent define East Asia?
- Why does he do so and how is this different from our definitions in HEA, CEA and PEA?
- China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan (Sino-Sphere)
- Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia
- Labour shift from the Sino-sphere to the other East Asian countries
- Similar development of almost all countries
East Asia and South East Asia are interconnected
Asian financial crisis: Thailand South Korea East Asia

- East Asia is interconnected
- Started with the drop of the bat and affected especially Korea but all of East Asia pretty hard
Rules and regulations
- Student guidelines
- Differences of opinion allowed (encouraged?) but keep it civil and academic
- Attendance (minimum of three)
- Be prepared, have access to the readings and feel free to ask questions
Course assignments
- Mid-term 30%
- Final exam 40%
- Tutorial grade 30%
o Reading report 10%
o Final essay 20%
- Term paper
o 1500 words
10 percent margin
including citations but excluding reference list
o Based on a minimum of five peer reviewed academic sources
