Unit 18 Assignment 2 Know about a range of sports injuries and their symptoms & Know how to apply methods of treating sports injuries HIGHEST GRADE: DISTINCTION GRADE ACHIEVED: DISTINCTION In this assignment, I described, explained and analysed both the physiological and psychological responses common to most sports injuries - I did this using relevant examples, references, research and diagrams. Next, I described first aid and common treatments used for four different types of sports injury - using examples and relevant diagrams. This assignment also includes a contents page, an introduction, a conclusion and a bibliography. ....PLEASE USE THIS ASSIGNMENT AS GUIDANCE....

,Introduction

In this assignment, I will begin by describing the three physiological responses to injury; damaged
tissue response, Scar tissue in the remodelling process and injury specific response. To support this,
I will create a timeline for a variety of different injuries that outlines the healing process. I will
then explain why these physiological reactions occur and how they change the player. Next, I will
Provide a sports scenario in which each of these reactions would occur and will then analysed the
process by using real world examples and references to back up my findings. After this I will
describe the 2 psychological responses to injury; Emotional responses to injury – Anger, isolation,
Emotional responses to treatment – Anxiety, frustration. I will explain why these psychological
reactions occur and how they change the player. I will provide a sports scenario in which each of
these reactions would occur. I will go on to analyse the process by using real world examples and
references to back up my findings. Following this I will describe the first aid required for two hard
tissue injuries; describe the first aid required for two soft tissue injuries; and will finally describe
PRICE, SALTAPS and specialist medical referrals.

The 3 physiological Reponses to injury

 Damaged tissue response

“A physiological response is defined as ‘the body’s physical mechanisms that respond when an
injury takes place. These are initiated to repair and protect the damaged tissue’.”
(wordpress.2019)

It is how your body reacts when something occurs to cause injury. The response is the chemical
process inside your body that repairs this injury. When an injury occurs, the body responds in a
number of different ways.

When body tissue is damaged the primary damage response mechanism initiates (pain and
inflammation) and the healing process begins. (wordpress.2019)

Bruises

 What are they and how are they formed?

A bruise is a common skin injury that results in a discoloration of the skin. Blood from
damaged blood cells deep beneath the skin collects near the surface of the skin, resulting in
what we think of as a black and blue mark.

 Causes of a Bruise
People typically get bruises when they bump into something or when something bumps into
them.

 Symptoms of bruises

, Initially, a fresh bruise may actually be reddish. It will then turn blue or dark purple within a
few hours, then yellow or green after a few days as it heals. A bruise is commonly tender, and
sometimes even painful for the first few days, but the pain usually goes away as the colour
fades. Because the skin is not broken in a bruise, there is no risk of infection. (webmd.2019)

 Types of bruises

- Subcutaneous bruises occur just beneath the skin.

- Intramuscular bruises occur in the underlying muscles.

- Periosteal bruises occur on the bones.

 Bodies response to a bruise

Bruises form when the soft tissues of the body get bumped. When they do, small veins and
capillaries (the tiniest blood vessels) under the skin sometimes break. Red blood cells leak
out of these blood vessels. These red blood cells that collect under your skin cause that
bluish, purplish, reddish, or blackish mark. That's where black-and-blue marks get their
name — from their colour under the skin.

Bruises go through colourful changes as the body begins to heal itself. The colour changes
mean that your body is metabolizing, or breaking down, the blood cells in the skin. This is
the process that your body goes through to repair itself. (kidshealth.2019)

Cuts

 What are they and how are they formed?

An open wound (or a cut) is an injury involving an external or internal break in body tissue,
usually involving the skin. The majority of individuals will experience an open wound at
some point in their life. However, most open wounds are minor and can be treated at home
without the need of specialist medical attention.

Falls, accidents with sharp objects, and car accidents are the most common causes of open
wounds or cuts. In the case of a serious accident, an individual should seek immediate
medical care. This is especially true if there’s excessive amounts of bleeding or if bleeding
lasts for more than 20 minutes. (healthline.2019)

 Symptoms of cuts

The symptoms of cuts and scratches include:
