1 Expressing present time (Present tenses)
A) Expressing time happening now (Present Continuous)
FORMATION:
Examples: Helen is swimming in the pool right now.
I am looking for my keys so we can leave.
Tom and Jolie are watching the live results of the
Eurovision Song Contest.
USE:
- Expressing actions happening at the time of speaking (now), including temporary
actions
Examples: Anju is joining a new fitness centre at this
moment.
We are staying in a new hotel on this trip.
(temporary action)
- Expressing longer actions occurring over time (stress the duration), including changes in
the environment or personality
Examples: With global warming, winters are getting
warmer. (change in environment)
She is not studying to be a nurse, but she is
studying to be a doctor. 1
, - Expressing actions in the future which have already been arranged (definite
arrangements)
Examples: We are seeing the Amy Winehouse concert
next week.
I am staying home the next two nights. I
have to study for my exams.
Tomorrow, she is baking a cake for her
friend’s birthday.
B) Expressing actions in present time (Present Simple)
FORMATION:
Examples: I work five days a week.
He wants to do diving.
USE:
- Expressing facts, states, and general truths
Examples: Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100°C.
The highest mountain in the UK is Ben Nevis.
Americans don’t drink more tea than British
people.
