HC 7: REPEATED MEASURES ANOVA (PART 1)
Wat?
- WITHIN-SUBJECT DESIGN
- Herhaalde meting = zelfde persoon meerdere keren meten op
verschillende niveaus ve factor
- 1 persoon meer observaties observaties = gekoppeld
Goal of lesson
- Learn how to use repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) to test if there are differences in the population’s
means across multiple time points for one group of participants
- Learn how to apply a statistical procedure for evaluating differences in the mean of a continuous outcome between two
or more time points in a one within-subject design.
EXAMPLE: HOW MUCH DOES THE USE OF E-CIG WITH NICOTINE REDUCE CRAVING?
- Investigate the impact of the use of e-cigarettes (e-cigs) with nicotine on cravings for tobacco cigarettes.
- Participants are asked about their levels of craving for a tobacco cigarette (i.e., “How strongly do you feel like having a
regular cigarette at this moment?” measured on a 0-100 scale) at 3 different time points:
o Time point 1 (pre): before vaping with an e-cig with nicotine
o Time point 2 (post measure 1): after 5 minutes of vaping with an e-cig with nicotine
o Time point 3 (post measure 2): after a 5-minute break
- Research questions: Are there differences in craving due to vaping an e-cig with nicotine?
- Description:
o This data set provides cravings for tobacco cigarettes scores of 39 participants at 3 different time points
o Variables:
Goesting_sig1: Craving scores at time point 1 (pre)
Goesting_sig2: Craving scores at time point 2 (post 1)
Goesting_sig3: Craving scores at time point 3 (post 2)

,BEGRIPPEN + INZICHTEN
WAAROM SPECIALE ANOVA?
ZELFDE persoon IN ALLE niveaus
Bv. Aantal meetmomenten
o Between-subject factor
BS-factor
VERSCHILLENDE personen in VERSCHILLENDE niveaus
Bv. Wel nicotine gebruik VS geen nicotine gebruik
TYPES V DESIGNS
- Puur herhaalde metingen bij enkel WS-factor
- Split-plot/gemengd design bij WS en BS-factor
T-TEST OF REPEATED MEASUREMENT
GEPAARDE T-TEST
verschil=post−pre
- Wat?
o Je test of het gemiddelde verschil nul is
o d i=Y i2 −Y i1 H 0 : μd =0
REAPEATED MEASURES ANOVA
post1 vs post2
STATISTICAL MODEL
NOTATIE
ENKEL “WITHIN-FACOR” – REPEATED MEASURE
, - Y ik is de score van persoon i op tijdstip k van de afhankelijke variabele (DV), waarbij i=1 , … , n j en k =1 , … ,b
- b is het aantal tijdstippen (Factor B)
- n is het aantal participanten
- μ is het algemene populatiegemiddelde van de DV
- μi ⋅ is het gemiddelde vd DV voor de i -de participant over de b tijdstippen, voor i=1 , … , n
o = Effect v factor B
STATISTICAL HYPOTHESIS
ENKEL “WITHIN- FACTOR” – REPEATED MEASURE
Use to investigate if there are differences in the population mean of the DV between the b time points.
- !!! It does not specify which means differ or in which direction the difference lies.
- H0: All time point means are equal (μ·k).
This is exactly the same as testing if the effect parameters of factor B are all equal to zero
o H0 : β1 = β2 = . . . = βb = 0
- H1: At least one of the effect parameters βk’s is different from zero
- Significance level (i.e., Type I error rate): α In the example: α = 0.05
SUMMARY
REDUCED MODEL:
o ( β 1=β 2=…=β b=0 )
- Statistisch model voor persoon i op tijdstip k :
o Y ik =μ+θi + ε ik met ε ik ∼iidN (0 , σ 2 ) en θi ∼ iidN (0 , σ 2θ ) voor i=1 , … , n
en k =1 , … ,b
FULL MODEL:
en k =1 , … ,b
- Onderdelen vh statistisch model
o μ = algemeen gemiddelde (over iedereen en alle tijdstippen)
o βk = effect van tijdstip k
o θi = persoonlijke afwijking van persoon i
