The best way to study

Published on October 22, 2018·Latest update at March 14, 2019

Every student knows how to study for at least 80%. Read your textbooks, follows the classes and lectures, prepare, etc. Though, to get through every semester in the best possible way and to be fully prepared for every exam, we listed a few study strategies for you. The best way to study:

Read ahead

When you have class on Monday, make sure you have read all the chapters they will discuss on Sunday. This way you will train your memory by repeating. Also you can make links between the information you’ve read in the textbook and the information your professor is telling you.

Get to know your professor during lectures and classes

When you actually go to your classes, you will learn from your professor’s which information of the course is the most important or which they value the most. Teachers and professors always like some theories more than other theories, which you will learn if you listen to them in class. If you only look at the 40 slides presentation at home, you never know which part the professor emphasized the most.

Write a summary or make a mindmap

When you write a summary or make a mindmap, you reflect on and repeat the information. Do this every week, so that you don’t have to learn all the information at once. To prepare for your exam, you only have to repeat the summaries and mind maps you’ve made, instead of reading all the text all over again.

Test yourself: make or use flashcards

Once you’ve learned the information from the textbook or reader, the important theories of your professor and your reflection on it in a summary or mindmap, it’s time to test yourself. You can do this by making flashcards. These are self made questions and answers, each on a different card. You can practice these questions until you’ve got a 100% score. You can also find flashcards on Stuvia or sell your own.

Make old exams

You can have the best flashcards in the world, though every professor has their own way in asking a question. Be sure to practice some old exams form the same professor. Also get the answers, so you can check yourself and learn the right answers.
