Unit 4 Assignment 2
Unit 4. Assignment 2. Anthropometry and Somatotype
Testing.
Kingston Sports Club have chosen my school to work as
volunteers to carry out the fitness testing for their
team. As a BTEC Sport and Exercise Science learner, I
must show that I can carry out a range of different
fitness tests accurately and appropriately on the players
of my local sports club whilst under supervision by my
teacher. The first fitness tests that the club team would
like me to complete are exploring the body composition
and somatotype of the players.
This booklet will look at the suitability of
anthropometric assessments and somatotype testing
protocols.
This booklet will provide judgements and draw
conclusions about the advantages and significance of
the following anthropometric procedures: Durnin and
Womersley skin fold method, Jackson and Pollock
Skinfold method, Body Mass Index, Bioelectrical
impedance analysis, Hydrostatic weighting, and Waist to
hip ratio.
This booklet will also contain information on the
following somatotype profiling including Somatotype
classification and Somatotype profiling.

Durnin and Womersley skin fold method:
The Durnin & Womersley four site test, developed in
1974, is the skinfold test that is most frequently used
(PT Direct, n.d.). For both men and women, this test
estimates body fat by adding the triceps, biceps,
subscapular, and suprailiac skinfolds. The following
instructions will help in finding the four locations used
in the Durnin and Womersley test for each site.
Tricep skinfold:
Take a vertical fold situated in the back of the upper
arm's midline. Measure halfway between the olecranon
process (bony point of the elbow) and the acromion
process (the shoulder's bony tip). Keep the arm held
freely by the side of the body.
Bicep skinfold:
Take a vertical fold situated above the belly of the bicep
muscle on the front midline of the upper arm 1
centimetre higher than the level that is utilised to mark
the triceps location.
Subscapular skinfold:
Take a diagonal fold. If you have trouble feeling the
bottom of the shoulder blade, ask the person to elevate

their arm behind their back. This should make the
scapula more noticeable. Take the fold around 1 to 2
centimetres below the inferior angle of the scapula (the
bottom of the shoulder blade).
Suprailiac skinfold:
Take a diagonal fold positioned 1 centimetre above the
anterior superior iliac crest (top of the hip bone). You
might need to firmly "poke" through thick
subcutaneous layers of fat to uncover the bone to
identify this landmark.
After measuring the skinfolds at each location, the
results can be added together from the four locations to
calculate an estimate of body fat percentage using the
information in the following table.
