My paper will discuss the differences between primary and secondary research along with
comparing and contrasting three different types of primary research methods with their
advantageous and their drawbacks. Lastly, I will discuss a common business problem and
describe in detail the types of research I would use to attempt to solve this problem.
What is the difference between primary and secondary research?
The main difference between primary and secondary research is the level of involvement
in research with the data gathering process. Primary research consists of the researcher gathering
the data directly. They will be directly involved in the data collection and categorization process.
According to Formplus, “In primary research, the researcher does not depend on already existing
data, rather he or she collects first-hand information which serves as research materials for the
systematic investigation (Formplus, 2021).” Primary research gives absolute ownership of the
data research they collect such as important information about the consumer needs and their
preferences.
Secondary research relies on already existing data materials rather than gathering data
directly. Secondary research is more time efficient research and less expensive. Secondary
research includes internet sites, archives, libraries, educational institutions, and organization
reports (Formplus, 2021). However, everyone knows not all information on the internet is true
and accurate, so the researcher needs to validate all the data.
