• Sterke professionalisering sinds midden 20ste eeuw

o Beroepsorganisaties
Interieurarchitectuur is een vrij jonge discipline ó Architectuur was al lang erkend
Pas sinds midden 20ste eeuw is interieurarchitectuur een voltijdse opleiding
Ook de opkomst beroepsorganisaties zijn een belangrijk punt in de professionalisering van
interieurarchitectuur
Voorbeelden beroepsorganisaties:
- Belgische Beroepsvereniging voor Binnenhuisarchitecten, opgericht in 1952 (Nu: de Associatie
van Interieurarchitecten AiNB)
- The Finnish Association of Interior Architects (SIO) opgericht in 1949
- The American National Society of Interior Designers, opgericht in 1957
• Parallel met industrieel ontwerp of productontwikkeling
Rond ongeveer zelfde tijd heeft die richting een eigen voltijdse oplossing gekregen
• Kenmerkend: aanhoudend debat over definiëring van de discipline
Omdat het een belangrijk debat is rond een jonge discipline, wordt daar nog veel onderzoek
naar gedaan
Bv: onderzoeksproject over de opkomst van interieurarchitectuur in België sinds einde
WOII tot 1999)

Nog een jongere discipline dan ‘interieurarchitectuur’

Hoe Interieurarchitectuur definiëren?
“Interior Design is the professional activity of constructing the homes, workplaces, institutions, retail
and leisure environments which constitue the insides of the built environment”

Is dit een gepaste definitie?
Hebben we een bredere, meer fluïde definitie nodig die ook rekening houdt met niet-
professionele ontwerpers? Waar begint een interieur en waar eindigt het?
Kan een buitenruimte een interieur zijn?
Hoe maken we het onderscheid tussen interieurvormgeving, interieurarchitectuur en
interieurdecoratie?

Interior decoration: “is the art of decorating interior spaces or rooms to impart a particular

Het belang van interieurarchitectuurtheorie
“Architectural theory identifies major themes and ideas in the history of architecture, but an
equivalent frameworks for interiors – one that references design history and simultaneously builds
upon its interdisciplinary relationships – is missing and needs to be written” (Lois Weinthal 2011)
Architectuurtheorie is al langere tijd zeer belangrijk, maar dit bestond nog niet voor
interieurarchitectuur
Lois Weinthal maakt een boek: Toward a New Interior – An Anthology of Interior Design
Theory. De ambitie van het boek is de ruggengraat van deze cursus
