Q1. Selected Context and Description of the Situation
For this portfolio, I chose the developmental assessment context because it
highlights how psychological assessment can be applied in everyday educational
settings.
The case involved a six-year-old boy, whom I will refer to as Lebo (pseudonym). His
Grade 1 teacher noticed that he was struggling with basic literacy skills, particularly
reading and writing, and that he often seemed hesitant to participate during class
activities. Concerned about his progress, the teacher recommended that he be
assessed by an educational psychologist.
The assessment was carried out in a child-friendly consulting room designed to make
young children feel comfortable and less anxious. The psychologist’s aim was to
explore Lebo’s cognitive, language, and socio-emotional development, and to
determine whether his learning difficulties were the result of a developmental delay, a
specific learning disorder, or emotional challenges. The information gathered would
guide both the school and his parents in planning suitable interventions and support
strategies.
