Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
VIROLOGIE
• Paramyxoviridae (diameter 100-300 nm)
• Envelopped; spikes van haemagglutinin en neuraminidase
• Single-stranded, (-)-sense RNA Reinfecties mogelijk
• Subgroepen A en B; strain variabiliteit → reinfecties mogelijk
In virale kweek
vormt het
syncytium
EPIDEMIOLOGIE
• Winterse epidemieen (Januari – Maart)
• Overdracht door respiratoir aerosol, close contact
• Infecties bij ~ 50% van kinderen < 1jaar; ~ 40% van deze infecties: LRT
• ~ Alle kinderen maken RSV infectie door tegen de leeftijd van 3 jaar
• Reinfecties mogelijk met milder klinisch beeld (URT)
RSV is de meest frequente oorzaak van LRT bij kinderen < 5 jaar
RSV in de meest voorkomende nosocomiale pathogeen in pediatrie URT = upper respiratory tract
