Bar Training Course Application Questions
For September 2020 intake

1. What are your primary reasons for wishing to qualify as a barrister? Please include
details of any experience you have gained, in a legal or non-legal environment, in
support of why you want to be a barrister. (up to 300 words)

I wish to qualify as a barrister as I want to bring justice to those who deserve it. I hope to one
day be the voice of the vulnerable and innocent, of whom have not had the opportunity to
stand up for themselves in the case of injustice. I interned at a law firm before starting my
educational journey in Law, and that experience encouraged my passion of pursuing a career in
this field to grow, with the end goal of becoming a barrister. During this experience I attended
court viewings and shadowed my mentor at clientele meetings. This allowed me to gain an
understanding for how law firm operate as well as of how the law works in the real world. I have
participated in an advocacy society speed-mooting competition and have even qualified for the
semi-final. Participating in this competition has helped me to master certain advocacy skills that
I would not have learned through an academic syllabus. I was also the president of the
university’s Malaysian Society, where I had to give a briefing in front of nearly 100 new students
and their families before they go abroad to start their journey. This event boosted my
confidence and improved my ability to speak in public, socializing with people not just my age,
but also with different age groups.

2. What three key personal strengths lead you to believe that you will be a successful
barrister? (up to 200 words)

I am a very open-minded person who is willing to experience new things. I have undertaken
an internship with a law firm, worked as a juice bar sales assistant and I have volunteered at
the local hospital. I decided to work at these different places as I wanted to learn some new
skills that would be highly beneficial within my future career. I also have excellent team
working skills as I was a member of the netball team throughout high school as well as a
member of the cultural society in the university. I enjoy being around other people, sharing
ideas and contributing to discussions. I also appreciate networking events as it allows me to
meet new people from all over the world as well as people from the industry that I am
interested in. Moreover, I am also a very independent person. I recently moved abroad for
university, and I have been able to quickly adapt to the new environment by understanding
the different cultures whilst also respecting other people’s differences. I have no problem
thinking of a solution to my own problems without expecting help from other people.

3. Please provide an example of where you have changed someone’s well-established
opinion and how this was achieved? This does not need to be on a legal subject. (up to
200 words)
