Society Task 1: Ethical Dilemma of Online Lesson Plans
and Student Privacy Western Governors University
D773 Task 1
A1. In scenario four, the high school teacher's problem is to continue using the online platform
with premade lesson plans that are convenient for him or notify his administration about the
platform and tell them about the student’s data being breached. One opposing option would
be for the history teacher to continue using the online platform without notifying the
administration. Although this seems like an easy option, this is problematic due to legal and
ethical violations. Not notifying the administration while the teacher knowingly violated privacy
laws could have legal repercussions. This affects the students, due to their information being
exposed without consent. This affects the teacher because he may lose his job, and the
school’s reputation is at risk. The second option would be for the teacher to stop using the
platform and not notify his administrator. This is problematic because the students’
information that was breached will still be out there for anyone to access. This harms the
students because their information could be released to anyone, which is unsafe. Neither one
of these options is acceptable from an ethical perspective. (WGU, 2020)
