Introduction
This assessment addresses key aspects of human resource maintenance and
retention, focusing on workplace diversity, stress and burnout management,
competency-based HR planning, and virtual work arrangements. Through case
studies and theoretical applications, the responses aim to provide practical insights
into these HRM challenges. The discussion includes an analysis of sexual harassment
and diversity distortions, strategies for managing burnout, differences between
traditional and competency-based HR planning, and the implications of remote work.
Question 1
1.1 From Leah's perspective, what is Shanah guilty of?
From Leah's perspective, Shanah is guilty of sexual harassment and abuse of
power. The case study recounts a specific incident where Shanah, the branch
manager, approached Leah with an inappropriate request for a hug, insinuating that it
would positively influence her upcoming performance appraisal. The incident involves
Shanah, her branch manager, who asked her for a hug, implying that it could positively
influence her upcoming performance appraisal. His exact words, "If you play along,
sweetheart, it might just be worthwhile for you. Is your performance appraisal not
scheduled for next week? I do so much for you. I am sure this is not too much to ask?"
clearly suggest an inappropriate proposition linked to her professional evaluation.
This clearly indicate coercion tied to workplace benefits, which falls within the legal
definition of quid pro quo harassment (Grogan, 2022). Leah’s rejection of the request
was met with retaliatory behaviour from Shanah, including unfair deadlines and an
unjust performance rating. Leah perceived this as an expectation of a personal favour
in exchange for a favourable performance rating, which she found unacceptable.
Following her rejection, Shanah's behaviour changed; he became less friendly and
started giving her impossibly short deadlines.
