1. Through a mix of clientelism, state-controlled reforms and military-led repression, Algeria
managed to evade the long tentacles of the Arab Spring in 2011. The 2019 peaceful Hirak
movement, which led to the eventual ouster of Abdelaziz Bouteflika was different because it was
the result of the outcome of a long-standing systemic crisis, which threatened the country’s
socio-political, and economic stability. Critically evaluate this ‘revolutionary situation’ that led
