, Question 1
Scope creep is identified often as the leading cause of project failure. It would
seem that ABC Bank has fallen victim to its negative effects. Analyse what are
the major sources of scope creep in ABC Bank’s IT projects and what can you
infer to be other possible sources of scope creep at ABC Bank?
Introduction : A definition and discussion of scope creep:
(Institute, 2013) defines scope creep as the uncontrolled expansion to a project or
product line without making the required adjustments to time, cost and other
resources. What this means is that additional requirements or deliverables may have
been added to the project, or the goal of the project has changed, intentionally or
unintentionally and key factors such as time, cost and available resources may not
have been considered or adjusted to make provision for the additional deliverables. It
becomes easy to add more work to projects when the scope is not clearly defined.
Scope creep does not only happen when projects are doing badly, some projects do
well and clients or stakeholders are so impressed that they request additional work.
Many project managers agree to this additional work as they base their decisions on
the work they’ve completed within the scope management plan, so they accept the
additional work without realizing the implication or making the required adjustments
to their cost, time and other resources required to complete the project.
(Kloppenborg, 2014)
An analysis of the sources of scope creep identified in the case study:
The case study mentions that a significant gap was identified in managing the scope
of projects at ABC Bank that allowed for ongoing changes to the scope of its IT
projects. The following areas have been identified as the sources of scope creep at
the bank:
Lack of scope control, poor project management and overall weak leadership at the
organisation. It has been identified that there has been a lack of scope control at the
bank, this means that management has allowed work to be added to projects without
