Questions and CORRECT Answers
vocabulary/word passage - CORRECT ANSWER - KEY THING:
give you different definitions of a word.
some may be correct but not correct of how its used in a passage.
Inference - CORRECT ANSWER - MAKE SURE:
conclusion based on the evidence in passage.
-what does it mean?
-what are they trying to say?
figure out what other things would be true based on what they told you there in passage.
Sweeping generalizations - CORRECT ANSWER - makes an oversimplified statement
about a group based on limited information
RED FLAGS:
-all of something
-never true
-never does
-none
-always
(these extremes are not the case)
Theme - CORRECT ANSWER - the main idea
,"what the passage is about"
Thesis Statement - CORRECT ANSWER - similar to a theme, but usually applies to
argumentative writing.
"main point the writer is trying to make"
topic sentence - CORRECT ANSWER - the central idea of what that paragraph is about.
sometimes the first sentence, not always
ex. sentence 3, main point of the paragraph.
title - CORRECT ANSWER - the key choosing the best title for a passage is to choose the
title that
"best reflects the central idea of the passage."
the title need not be the flashiest choice.
KEY THING ITS DESCRIBING WILL LEAD YOU TO THE BEST TITLE
Purpose and intended audience - CORRECT ANSWER - ask you what is your purpose or
who is the audience of the writing
Subject matter - CORRECT ANSWER - would this topic be appropriate?
ex. is this a general news story? general audience?

style and diction - CORRECT ANSWER - vocabulary is simple, high-level, academic,
conversational?
jargon: terms used in certain field.
formal: publication
informal: write to friend
tone - CORRECT ANSWER - what is the author's view of the subject?

for the intended audience
Passage organization - CORRECT ANSWER - what way was this passage organized?
LOOKING AT
structure of ideas
(how one idea flowed to the next in so far)
PROMPT
what is each sentence trying to accomplish how they relate to one another.
common organizational patterns - CORRECT ANSWER - be on the look out for
broad concepts - CORRECT ANSWER - specific details or
