Unit 6 Work experience
Learning aim A
P1: Explain how work experience can support the development of own professional
skills and personal attributes for work in the health and social care sector
Work experience can support the development of professional skills and attributes as it will
help individuals develop their own skills and attributes for future careers and volunteering work
etc. Skills like compassion, patience and time management will be developed during work
experience as individuals will adapt to learn these types of skills which will increase their
chances of securing their dream job.
My work placement will take place in a primary school which is a social setting, and this will
help improve my social skills by learning to communicate well with students and teachers. The
placement will enable me to understand the workplace setting so I can follow rules that have
been set as well as developing social relationships. Developing skills and attributes in the
primary school will also help children learn more about their own talents and abilities.
A personal skill I have is being organised which means getting work done on time with college
assignments and being efficient with tasks. Organisation skills will help focus my time, resources
and effort on work that is important. A personal attribute I have is being attentive which means
being able to pay close attention to something such as environment. This is important in my
future career as a midwife as attention to detail will reduce errors and improves the quality of
care for patients. However, a personal attribute that I need to improve on is confidence. This is
because being confident will help me feel ready for life experiences and would be more likely to
try new things. My work experience will help me feel confident as it will teach me to feel more
self-assured talking to new people. This will also improve my communication skills and help me
build formal and informal relationships.
P2: Discuss ways in which work experience can inform own career choices and help
prepare for employment in the health and social care sector
I think that gaining work experience will be extremely helpful in deciding the career path
suitable for me. Working over a period of time will highlight various aspects of my chosen
professional path that are specific to me because I will be tasked with a range of duties and
responsibilities to perform. Doing work experience in a primary school will give me the
opportunity to speak to children and their families which also links to midwifery. The ability to
co-operate with others and work well in a team is crucial for working in any career industry. As
