, The conversation of gender identity and transgender in today’s society has increased but
the topic in general can still be quite controversial especially when talking about gender in
youths. One of the biggest outwards and talked about trends of current status are pronouns and
the important role they take in gender but with pronouns comes many people who refuse to use
them in the correct form and other people who say, “its to complicated” and will continue to
refer to individuals as their non preferred pronouns. Something so simple as pronouns cause
enough controversy or disrespectful comment that it is hard for individuals, especially
adolescents, to express their preferred gender because they are scared or the backlash they could
face. Some adolescents feel safest at school and will be more likely to express themselves there
with their friends and this means they might present their gender differently there and not be
telling their community outside of school.
An article by the New York Times called “When Students Change Identity and Parents
Don’t Know.” Talks about the new ways that the schools have to adapt and make new policies to
be inclusive to all the students and make sure that all their students are comfortable. Within this
article the issue of morals and ethics is questions because the parents feel that the schools should
be informing them of when their children are changing their identity at school. Another issue is
the safety concern of the children who change their gender identity, with some families or
communities not being excepting of the change can make the child feel unsafe and unwelcome.
“Schools have pointed to research that shows that inclusive policies benefit all students, which is
why some education experts advise schools to use students’ preferred names and pronouns.
Educators have also said they feel bound by their own morality to affirm students’ gender
identities, especially in cases where students don’t feel safe coming out at home.” (Baker, 2023).
In some schools there is a club called the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) in which students who
