, 1. Introduction
Joseph Juran’s approach to quality management is a comprehensive strategy that
emphasizes “fitness for use” by focusing on quality planning, quality control, and
quality improvement. His methodology is widely applicable in healthcare
organizations to enhance service delivery, reduce quality-related costs widely
applies to, and ensure customer satisfaction (University of South Africa,2023). This
assignment explores how Juran’s principles can be applied to improve quality in a
healthcare organization.
2. Description of Healthcare Organization
2.1. Type of Service Provided to Improve Quality
The healthcare organization in focus is a public hospital specializing in primary
healthcare services, including emergency care, maternal and child health,
immunization programs, and community outreach. The aim is to provide accessible,
affordable, and high-quality care to a diverse patient population. Improvement efforts
are focused on reducing waiting times, enhancing patient safety, and improving
clinical outcomes through evidence-based practices and patient-centered care
initiatives.
2.2. Service Delivery Legislation
The service delivery legislation used to determine quality improvement in the hospital
includes the National Health Act 61 of 2003, which provides the framework for a
structured uniform health system within South Africa, and the National Core
Standards for Health Establishments, which outline the requirements for quality care
and patient safety.
3. Goals of Juran’s Approach to Quality
Juran's approach to quality aims at achieving two main goals: increasing
conformance to standards and reducing the cost of quality. These goals are integral
to healthcare organizations, where patient safety and cost-efficiency are paramount
(University of South Africa, 2009).
