In the skills training “Life course and Health” you have collected life course data of two
generations. The study is organized such that each of you has collected data of one of the
two generations; not both. The oldest generation was 70-80 years old and the youngest
generation was 50-60 years old. Both generations answered the same set of questions
twice: at the age of 30 years and at the age of 50 (in retrospect). For the present research
you need to analyze whether the body mass changes between the age of 30 and the age of
50; separately for the younger and older generation. Moreover, we are also interested
whether the change in body mass (from 30 up to 50 years) differs between the younger and
older generation. The following research questions are formulated.
1. Is there a change in body mass among the younger generation between the age of 30
and the age of 50?
2. Is there a change in body mass among the older generation between the age of 30 and
the age of 50?
3. Does the average change in body mass differ between younger and older generation?
Vraag 1
1. Translate the research questions into formal hypotheses. Explain why you have
formulated the hypotheses in this way.
H0: μchange_younger = 0
Ha: μychange_younger ≠ 0
μchange_younger = verschil in BMI op 30 jarige en 50 jarige leeftijd van de jongere
generatie
H0: μchange_older = 0
Ha: μchange_older ≠ 0
