Science notes

Unit 1 = Scientific method, lab tracking
Unit 2 = Chemistry
Unit 3 = Electricity
Unit 4 = Space / Astronomy
Unit 5 = Ecology
Started on Monday

Yellow highlight = Most likely on exam (not to be confused with comments)
Red highlight = Most likely not on exam
Green highlight = The answer

Unit 1 Chap 1: Observations, Inferences and predictions

Observations: What was found with our 5 humans senses with the help of tools and equipment

Qualitative observation: Using words or like the 5 human senses (like colour, texture, smell)

Quantitative observation: measured in numbers like mass volume or temperature

Prediction: AN educated guess about a future event based on an observation and / or inference

What is a making a inference?

An inference is a means to interpret, explain or make a conclusion based on OBSERVATIONS

For example: We see 2 types of foot prints in the snow but after both foot prints collide only 1
foot print comes out

An interference can be: The 2 animals fought and one was murdered when they collided

Whats the difference observation and inference

Observation must be true = There are footprints of in the snow = There must be an animal that
has pasted by

Inference (kinda like guessing what happpend) : She has strong arms, so she must exercise

Unit 1 Chap 2: Scientific method

Hypothesis = A hypothesis is a prediction, or as some people call it an educated guess

,For example: If the amount of fast food eaten is increased, then the amount of weight gained
will increase
Do not forget to add the bolded words

Independent variable = The variable that will be affected
Dependent variable= The variable that will determine how to affect the independent variable

For example: The result of your exam, will be determined by the # of hours studied

Purpose: The purpose of conducting the experiment

Materials: The materials that are used to conduct an experiment (The pencil does not count if it
is only used to write stuff down)

Procedure = Explain what you are doing during the experiment
It must be written in past tense with a passive voice ( meaning no i’s, no she, no he, no
they )

Example: A metal can, water and sugar was obtained, water was poured into the metal can.
Then, sugar was added into the water. Blah blah bah

YOU mUST BE EXTREMELY CONCISE AND CLEAR ABOUT IT, so much so as it must be
replicated perfectly to have the same results.

Conclusion: Was the hypothesis correct?

Example: In conclusion,. The amount of weight gain increased when the amount of fast food
eaten was increased.

In total you should have the

1. Title
2. Purpose
3. Hypothesis
4. Materials
5. Procedure
6. Observations
7. Discussion ( not really )
8. Conclusion

Unit 1 Chap 3 = Independent, dependent and controlled variables

Controlled variables are the variables that need to be the same during multiple experiences
Independent variable = The variable that will be affected

, Dependent variable= The variable that will determine how to affect the independent variable

Example:
A paper airplane is thrown

Controlled variables can be = The paper airplane must be folded the same, it must be the same
paper, the environment must be the same.

Blah blah

Unit 2 Chap 1: Chemistyyyyy ewewewew WHMIS LAB SAFETY
Protect ur eyes, hands, skin, clothes, and feet

You cannot eat or drink during a lab
Never pour water into acid, always pour acid into water.

Dont smell lab stuff, only smell it with the hand waving technique.

Whmis:

Exploding= For explosions or reactivity hazards

Gas cylinder = Gases tinder pressure

Health hazard = May cause serious health issues

Flammable

Corrosive

Exclamation mark= May cause serious health effects or damage the ozone layer
