FOR LEARNER USE ONLY! (please read below*) If you have not yet read the book, then this is the English summary for you. A complete and comprehensive English summary of the book, containing all the important information in 13 pages that you will need to write the exam or test. My students have had great success with this in the past and I know it will help you get a higher mark for paper 2 as well. *TEACHERS*: please refrain from copying, using, sharing or distributing my summary. It took me days to summarize this book. As an extra lesson teacher, this, coupled with my few one-on-one lessons per week, is my sole source of income. Therefore: please feel free to refer your learners to my page to purchase this summary as them obtaining a better mark in Afrikaans Paper 2, will reflect well on you as their teacher in the process. Thank you kindly for adhering to my plea.

ENGLISH SUMMARY OF

deur
Carina Diedericks-Hugo

Chapter 1
We meet Thomas Steyn, Hannes and Lukas. The three of them are best friends and they are
busy playing rugby. Thomas and Hannes argue about Hannes who was off side and it seems
quite heated, but then they laugh about a joke and everything is fine again. They talk about
getting pizza and we find out that Tiaan has a stepmother called Louisa who makes amazing
food. Hannes’s mom is forever on a diet, poor thing :/

Then they see the other players at the notice board and remember about the rugby tour to
Namibia. Lukas and Hannes are both in the side that’s going on tour, but Thomas’s name is
nowhere to be seen. Thomas thinks it’s because he started off the season a bit shaky:
1. he was unfit because of his role in a soap opera he played in a while back
2. and Billy Fourie, a very good flyhalf which is the same position as what Thomas plays, came
to High school Leeukop.

, Mr. Du Toit, their coach, tells Thomas it’s because his father asked Mr. Du Toit not to put his
son in the team because he is worried about Thomas’s academic performance as of late.
Thomas knew nothing about this.

Chapter 2
Thomas is very upset with his father when he gets home. We find out that his dad is an
advocate. Thomas’s dad gives reasons for him not wanting Thomas to go to Namibia (p11):

1. Thomas found out something very important about their house and almost got hurt
because of it in a previous book.
2. Thomas and Hannes discovered a computer virus and fooled a few abalone poachers,
also in a previous book.
3. There was a serial killer after Thomas.
4. He had a terrible grade 9 camp the previous year.
5. He got to play a role in a soap opera.
6. His marks dropped from an A to a C.

Thomas throws a tantrum and says he has never been in the B-team before. His dad tells him
to calm down and grab a pizza with him while Louisa and Lara (his younger sister) are at
friends, but Thomas does not want to have anything to do with his dad. (Ugh, Thomas: you are
such a big baby!)

Chapter 3
Thomas is very hungry and decides to order himself a pizza. He stays in the outside room
attached to the house where the delivery guy can give him his pizza. We find out that Thomas
stays in Cape Town in a very old Victorian style house.

Thomas checks his messages and sees he has a few from Hannes, Lukas and Thomas’s
girlfriend, Alex. They have been going out for about a year. She is in the debate team that will
be going on the tour to Namibia. He has a cat called Cleo whom he shares his sea food pizza
with.

Thomas goes on Facebook. He has 83 friends. Suddenly a mysterious picture pops up of a guy
with a longish black fringe. He can’t really see his face, but his name is: Superdude. This boy
sent him a friend invite and Thomas clicks on “accept”. Thomas goes to Superdude’s profile
and sees that the guy has 119 friends. They start chatting and Thomas finds out that
Superdude has a tattoo. He then gives Thomas advice about his situation regarding the tour
saying Thomas should tell his coach that his dad said it’s fine for him to go and to then tell his

Afrikaans First Additional Language Book Summaries and Exams for Grades 8 - 12

I completed my BA Afrikaans Dutch and Honor degrees, as well as my teaching degree, all Cum Laude. I have 17 years of teaching and tutoring experience and translate the work my students are given, to English for them because this way, it puts them in a better position to obtain the best possible Afrikaans mark they can get. We all know how frustrating it is when that one subject pulls down your entire average: don't let that subject be Afrikaans any longer with my help!
