CHL2601 ASSESSMENT 2 FORUM DISCUSSION
Before you draft your response for this assessment, click on the links below to
get the context necessary to help you prepare for this assessment.
Roald Dahl: The fierce debate over rewriting children's classics - BBC Culture
Is it time to rewrite fairy tales? - BBC Culture
In this module you are, amongst other things, going to learn how to select books
and stories that are appropriate for young children (birth to age nine). You will
become familiar with the theories of Vygotsky, Erikson, Piaget, to name but a few,
and whose work informs teachers on what children in specific phases of their lives
need to thrive. If we are to reflect on appropriate literature for young children, our
culture, our own view of the world and our belief systems may influence our
choice of books and stories.
Recently there has been a discourse on the censorship of children’s literature.
Assessment 2 is therefore prompting you to reflect on the good and the bad of
censorship of children’s literature.
The Assessment 2 question:
Based on the articles that you have read, reflect on, and provide your own view
of the matter. Consider the questions below, and then carefully draft your
answer.
What is your view on the censorship of children’s literature? In your reflection,
consider the following:
Why would censorship of children’s literacy be necessary?
When censorship of children’s literature does becomes an extreme and undesired
form of control?
Is the role of books and stories not to challenge and to educate?
Is censorship the only way of dealing with gender and ethnic stereotypes or other
sensitivities in children’s literature?
You can either type/copy your response into the textbox of the discussion forum,
or you can save your file and upload as a Word or a PDF document.
Ensure that you upload your assessment in the correct forum discussion. It you
have not uploaded your response in the CHL2601 Assessment 2 forum
discussion shell, but in a different discussion forum, it will not be graded.
All the best.

, What is your view on the censorship of children’s literature? In your
reflection, consider the following:

My view on the censorship of children's literature is taken on, considering various
factors such as the necessity of censorship, the potential for censorship to
become excessive control, the role of books and stories in education and
challenging readers, and alternative approaches to addressing stereotypes and
sensitivities.

Censorship in children's literature is a contentious topic, often invoking debates about
the balance between protection and freedom of expression. On one hand, there are
valid reasons for censoring children's literature, particularly when it comes to shielding
young minds from content that may be inappropriate or harmful. Children, with their
developing cognitive and emotional capacities, may not possess the maturity to
process certain themes or depictions. Therefore, censorship serves as a safeguard to
ensure that children are exposed to material that is suitable for their developmental
stage and aligns with societal norms and values. For example, removing explicit
violence, graphic imagery, or mature themes from children's books may be necessary
to preserve their innocence and emotional well-being.

Why would censorship of children’s literacy be necessary?

Censorship of children's literature can be necessary to protect young readers from
content that may be inappropriate or harmful for their age and maturity level.
Children are impressionable and may not have the cognitive or emotional maturity
to process certain themes or depictions. Therefore, censorship serves as a
safeguard to ensure that children are exposed to material that is suitable for their
developmental stage and aligns with societal norms and values.

Censorship of children's books is sometimes needed to keep kids safe and protect
them from things that might upset or harm them. For example, books with
violence or scary scenes might not be suitable for young readers. Censorship also
helps make sure that books teach good values and don't promote ideas that could
be harmful or unfair.

But censorship can become a problem if it's too strict. When censorship goes too
far, it limits creativity and stops kids from reading a wide variety of books. It's
important for kids to have access to different perspectives and ideas so they can
learn and grow.

Parents and schools censor books to make sure kids are reading things that are
appropriate for their age. They want to trust that the books their kids read are safe
and helpful for their development.

So, censorship of children's books is necessary to protect kids, but it should be
done carefully to make sure kids still have access to a range of good books that
help them learn and understand the world around them.
