World Geography SOL Review What is the difference between absolute location and relative location? - Absolute location is the exact position of a place. Relative location is the position of a place compared to the position of another place. What do latitude lines measure? Which direction are they drawn? What is the 0 degree line? - Latitude lines measure north and south. They are drawn east to west. The Equator What do longitude lines measure? Which direction are they drawn? What is the 0 degree line? - Longitude lines measure east and west. They are drawn north and south. The Prime Meridian What is another word for orientation? What feature on a map helps with orientation? - Position. Compass Rose. What is the purpose of a scale on a map? - How big or small a city or country is in real life compared to the map. What is the purpose of contour lines on a map? - To show how different areas can be steep or slopey compared to other areas on the map. What is distortion? What types of things are distorted on a flat map? - When the shape, distance, relative size, and/or direction of places on maps aren't accurate based on those factors in real life. What is the difference between weather and climate? - Weather is the temperature and/or precipitation in an area during that time. Climate is the temperature and/or precipitation in an area over a general period of time. It is what people think the weather is like in that area all the time when they don't even live there based on where it is in the real world compared to the places around it. What is the purpose of a legend on a map? - So you can know what each symbol means. Why and where is deforestation occurring? - Deforestation is occurring because people need to make room for more infrastructure. Deforestation is also occurring because people need the trees to make more paper and other things that require timber for our convenience (furniture and stuff). Deforestation is occurring in areas where there are many trees and people just don't care what is currently living there and decides to cut down the trees for our own comfort and convenience. Ex: Nepal, Brazil, and Malaysia What is acid rain and where is it a problem? - Acid rain is when there are pollutants in the air when it rains. It is a problem in the forests in Germany, Scandinavia, China, Eastern North America What is the Greenhouse Effect? - When there is too much gas emissions from factories and cars that is blocks the sunlight from escaping, making the world a whole lot hotter. What causes erosion? - The removing of trees that hold the soil in place with its roots. What is the difference between a political and physical map? - A political map has a theme whereas a physical map shows the physical landscape. What types of information can be shown on a thematic map? - Thematic maps represent a single variable over an area. Describe the Mercator projections and state a use. - The Mercator projection is a cylindrical map projection presented by the Flemish geographer and cartographer Geradus Mercator in 1569. Built for the aviation industry, Mercator's solutions enable leading airlines across the globe to respond swiftly and intelligently to their operating and financial challenges. Describe the Robinson projection and state a use. - The Robinson projection is a map projection of a world map which shows the entire world at once. It was specifically created in an attempt to find a good compromise to the
