Arminians- People who believe in a type of Protestantism, happy with the ‘Middle Way’
Calvinists- People who believe in a type of Protestantism, belief in Predestination
Catholics- People who believe in a branch of Christianity led by the Pope
Hastings Committee- Committee under Sir Francis Hastings, investigated and recommended religious
changes
‘Mother Church’- James referring to the Catholic Church
Bancroft's Canons (1604)- Regulations to the governing of the Church and all the Clergy had to take an
oath to agree.
Silenced Brethren- Clergy deprived of livings for not accepting Bancroft’s Canons. About 1%.
Millenary Petition(1603)- Petition by Puritans for further reforms to church.
Hampton Court Conference (1604)- Discussed grievances and Millenary Petition. Puritans are unhappy
at time. Creation of King James Bible, first published in 1611.
New Gag for an Old Goose- Religious pamphlet, stressed Catholic origins of CofE, denied it was Calvinist.

Appello Caesarum- Brought the King into the debate into Calvinism and Catholic roots of the Church.
Synod of Dort-1618-19. Meeting in Dort, Netherlands. Settle religious debate sparked by Arminianism.
James told the English Delegates to support an Anti-Arminian view.
Book of Sports- List of sports and recreation allowed to be played on the Sabbath. In response to
complaints about Puritans not allowing this.
Spanish Match- Proposed marriage between Charles and Spanish Infanta, Maria Anna. Failed, lasted 4
years (talks). Talks= very one sided to benefiting Spain. Some saw it as a threat to Protestantism.
Directions to Preachers- Gave declaration forbidding anyone below the rank of bishop from delivering
sermons on controversial religious issues.
Game at Chess- Play by Thomas Middleton. Comical and satirical. Form of Chess Match represents
Spanish Match. Shut down after 9 days.
Commons Protestation- 1621. The House of Commons reaffirms freedom of speech, but James believed
Parliament had no right to discuss Foreign Policy. James tore up.
