P3 – Task 1.1
STEP 1 - RATIONALE:
Based on research that we have carried out during this past week, we decided that we
want to have a health promotion campaign based on the subject of the effects of sugar,
what consuming too much sugar can do to your body and how it can lead to development
of type 2 diabetes because of the raised insulin resistance.
We want to do our health promotion based on sugar intake and its effects as the information
we found out after conducting research was extremely shocking to all of us and we felt the
dangers of consuming too much sugar is not advertised enough. Sugar is found in all
varieties of diets, it is contained in drinks, fruit such as apples and even hidden in foods such
as bread which you would not expect. The average teenager in Britain consumes 90g of
sugar a day overall with 74.5g of that sugar being added sugar (added sugar comes from
items like soft drinks such as coca cola, jams, biscuits and chocolate bars). The basic
allowance for added sugar daily is only 45g or less, this means we are consuming 29.5g more
sugar than our bodies should be having. “Too much sugar can lead to the buildup of harmful
fat on the inside that we can't see. This fat around vital organs can cause weight gain and
serious diseases in the future like heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers. Having
too much sugar can also cause tooth decay”. - (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-
27941325)

The main reason for our campaign is to educate and make both students and teachers
around the college aware on the effect of what too much sugar can do, even if we don’t
persuade everyone to cut down on sugar we are still aiming to at least educate everyone
who visits our campaign so they can walk away with more information on the dangers of
sugar than they came with therefore able to make a knowledgeable choice on whether to
make a change as someone can use the dangers of sugar not being talked about enough
in schools or the media as an excuse to consume as much as they like and take the blame
off themselves. Our decision for our target group to be mainly teenager’s/ college students
came from the research we found that over 370,000 children in the UK, 25% girls and 24%
boys, are now obese by the time they are 15 due to the intake of excess sugar. “25 per cent
of children aged two to five are overweight or obese, along with 33 per cent among those
between 6 and 10, and 37 per cent of those between 11 and 15.” -
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/health/news/11378197/One-in-four-teens-now-obese-by-
15.html. By putting together an effective, shocking and eye-catching campaign we are
hoping students will pick up on the negative effects of consuming too much sugar and that
our campaign will help them to have understanding on the ways in which they can change
their eating habits and lifestyle to reduce the negative health effects sugar has on our
bodies and reduce the change of them getting type 2 diabetes which is a very serious
condition.
Another reason for choosing to do our campaign on this subject comes from personal
experience of one member in our group whose family member suffers from type 2 diabetes
due to their excessive intake of sugar over the years. She has unfortunately witnessed the
effects of consuming too much sugar first hand and watched her family member slowly
develop type 2 diabetes due to their poor life choices.
A national campaign which is linked in to our campaign in trying to inspire healthier eating
and less consumption of excessive sugar, is the CHANGE4LIE campaign. We gathered some
ideas which will help us with our campaign and display from the change4life website, it
contains useful information, facts and ideas. Even though our campaign is mainly aimed at a
younger audience due to them being more likely to carry their unhealthy sugar habit into
