You have been working for a large engineering company as
an engineering apprentice for four years. Two months ago
your company bought and took over one of its smaller rivals
and you have been asked to form part of the technical team
that will visit their factory to assess the effectiveness and
efficiency of their manufacturing processes.
Vocational Scenario or
Your supervisor has assigned you to investigate how the
Context
Ford Focus and the Morgan Classic Plus 4 are
manufactured. He has asked to report on the processes,
layouts and documentation used for each product,
suggesting potential improvements where possible.

Your findings are to be presented in an illustrated written
report.

Provide a short description of each contrasting product.

Your written report should then provide detailed information
on:

● The principles and characteristics of the different
Task 1
manufacturing process types (for example, jobbing,
batch, mass) and manufacturing layout types (for
example, fixed, process, cellular) chosen for each
product
● The arrangement of manufacturing resources and
how each product moves through them

, ●How the a) characteristics of the product; b) volume
to be made; c) complexity of processes required;
and d) other products being produced at the same
time influenced the manufacturing process type and
manufacturing layout type chosen for each product
● The importance of different types of documentation
used to coordinate manufacture for each product
(such as material lists, stores requisitions, visual
aids etc), commenting on what the documentation is
used to communicate and to whom, when and how it
is issued and the activities that are triggered,
coordinated, and managed
● How the type, complexity and use of the
documentation employed for each product was
influenced by the manufacturing process
types/manufacturing layout types chosen and the
complexity of each product
● Why the manufacturing process types, and
manufacturing layout types chosen are justifiable for
each product and any potential improvements that
could be made to make them more effective
● The advantages and disadvantages of the
documentation system employed to coordinate
manufacture for each product, referring to any
possible alternatives that could improve efficiency,
reliability and speed of manufacture.
Checklist of evidence A written report containing the information above, that
required should include diagrams and photographs were applicable
Criteria covered by this task:
Unit/Criteria
To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to:
reference
Explain, using contrasting product examples, the principles and
39/B.P2
characteristics of different manufacturing process types.
Explain, using contrasting product examples, the principles and
39/B.P3
characteristics of different manufacturing layout types.
Explain, using contrasting product examples, the importance and use
39/B.P4
of manufacturing documentation.
Analyse, using contrasting product examples, the selection of
39/B.M2
manufacturing process types, layout types and documentation used.
Evaluate, using contrasting product examples, the selection of
39/B.D2 manufacturing process types, layouts and documentation used,
suggesting improvements where appropriate.

, Assignment 2- Research based on Manufacturing Processes and Procedures

In this report requested by our supervisor, we will examine the manufacturing processes and
layouts, documentations used and in use for the two products by the two different companies that
manufacture the Ford Focus and the Morgan Classic Plus 4. We are required to explore the main
principles and characteristics of the different types of manufacturing processes that are in use to
create different parts and components that will make up the car as a whole. We must also research
and mention the type and scale of manufacture that is carried out by the companies, and we must
mention how these affect the quality and the complexity of the processes. None the less we must
improve certain aspects of the companies where is applicable and we must give a specific reason for
the changes in relation to documentation, layout and manufacturing processes.

1. Manufacturing and Process types and layouts for the two companies/Cars

Morgan Classic Plus 4:

Morgan Classic Plus 4 car is a very luxurious car, these cars are created by using a jobbing process.
The workshop where the Morgan Classic Plus 4 is made is a fixed layout which has not been changed
for the last 25 years. Initially the main chassis of the car is made out of wood which is precisely cut,
and the wood softened and bent over 2 days. The company has decided to keep the entire
manufacturing process same as it was initially done the only slightly advanced machinery, they use is
a lathe which allows them to carve the wood more precisely and a dye cutting machine which cuts
the main outer body of the car. It is classed as a jobbing process due to the fact that it’s a piece of art
and people do not use this car from day to day and due to this the cost reflects this and it has a
whopping price of £70,000 pounds this is also mainly due to the accuracy and precision of work
carried out by the crafts man.

Ford Focus:

The Ford Focus is a small but renown car for its great fuel efficiency and its great reliability due to
these fact that car is very popular around the world. Due to this reason the car is mass produced in
many different factories around the world, based on the location of the factory the layout differs for
example the factory in Rayong Thailand has a completely different layout to the one based in
Michigan. The reason for this is different health and safety standards and different access to the
locations. However, the assembly are exactly the same however for certain special models there are
extra workstation are included to facilitate those modifications to enable easy assembly. The
assembly line is a mixture of automation and human combination this is to ensure that the mass
production that is set out by ford is at its most optimal state as humans can carry out internal
assembly much easier compared to robots.
