Soil erosion and its effects to the global environment
Soil erosion by water is a widespread problem in Europe, with the most dominant effect being the loss of topsoil. Physical factors such as climate, topography, and soil characteristics are essential. The Mediterranean region is prone to erosion due to prolonged dry periods and heavy bursts of erosive rainfall. The area affected by soil erosion in northern Europe is much more restricted than in southern Europe. In parts of the Mediterranean region, erosion has reached a stage of irreversibility. The leading causes of soil erosion are inappropriate agricultural practices, deforestation, overgrazing, and construction activities. To increase awareness, the identification of areas that are vulnerable to soil erosion is needed.
