recognition for the work she did. He stole A LOT from her and she was wronged.)

2 Setting
When does the story take place? How can you tell?
The story takes place from the Spring of 1922 to the Fall of 1922. Nick Carraway, the
narrator of the story, moves to the East in the Spring of 1922.
‘I came East, permanently, I thought, in the Spring of twenty-two’
At the end of the story, when Gatsby is murdered, leaves will start to fall pretty soon.
(from the tree, implying that Fall is starting).
‘ ‘I’m going to drain the pool today, Mr. Gatsby. Leaves’ll start falling pretty soon, and
there’s always trouble with the pipes.’ ’
After Gatsby is murdered, Nick encounters Tom one more time in October (when it is
officially Fall).
The rest of the story is more of a reflection on the life of Gatsby and the tragic ending.
This is in the Winter when Nicks moves back to the Midwest.
Other (smaller) indicators of the period in the book are:
- Nick is in the Bond Business. He moves East, with hopes of building a career for
himself, as a Wall Street Bondsman. Because of the booming economy of the 20s
in America, you could become very wealthy.
‘So I decided to go East and learn the bond business.’
Because of the Stockmarket, the economy of America indeed thrived in the 20s,
so it’s a perfect time indicator.
- Another indicator of time is the number of racist slurs and references. (mostly
from Tom) (something not very woke, but old-fashioned)
For example: ‘ Have you read The Rise of the Colored Empires by this man
Goddard? ‘Why, no,’ I answered, rather surprised by his tone. ‘Well, it’s a fine book,
and everybody ought to read it.’
