Aftertheinterviewerhasgivenmeanintroductionandinformedmeaboutwhatmakesthecompanysogreat, one of the first questions I am usually asked is “What made you apply for this position”? Then theywould go on to ask, “What would make you a good fit for our company”? Then there are usually a fewmore questions like, “Please tell me about a situation where there was conflict? How did you resolve it?Nowtellmeabout asituation whenyouwere atyourbest?” One of the questions I am constantly asked during an interview that I do not believe is helpful is,“Where do you see yourself within 5 or 10 years?” The reason I never see this question as helpful isbecauseIknowthatIamgoingtogivetheinterviewertheanswertheywanttohear.Theusualansweris“Iseemyselfgrowingwithinthecompanytothebestofmyabilities”.Whilethatanswermayormaynotbe true, I do not know if I would even like this company to work for the next 5 or 10 years. One of the questions I am constantly asked during an interview that I do believe is helpful is, “What makes you a good candidate for our company”? The reason this is a helpful question is becausethisisanopportunityfortheinterviewerseehowwellyoucansellyourself.Accordingto(Engle,2019),letting the candidate speak because it represents an accurate reflection of the candidates thinkingprocess, and personal values. During my response, I am highlighting my best qualities, which includesthe ability to be a fast trainable employee. Most companies have their own ways of doing the samethingsandtheyliketoknowthatthepotentialemployeeisflexibleandwillingtolearn. I like to utilize different sources that I find helpful in giving advice regarding the interviewprocess. I used to watch videos on VHS, then DVD, and finally the internet. I also tend to find someonewho works in the field or company of which I have applied for and ask a few questions about thecompany.AnotherresourceIstillusefromtimetotime,aremyolderrelatives.SinceIcomefromaverybigfamily,Ihavefamilymemberswhohasworkedinmanyfieldsandpositions.Iwouldaskoneofthemtosetsometimeasideandgooverwithmearehearsalinterview.IalsomakesurethatIamwellrestedthe night before and eat about an hour and half before an interview. He was surprised about how I answered and the result of it. The nonverbal cues did put meateaseandencouraged metocontinuewith myanswer. I was taught by my parents and etiquette class, a long time ago to choose your interviewwardrobe wisely. No matter what type of job I am interviewing for, I try to dress professionally. Duringthis interview, I did wear black slacks, red blouse, black, blazer, and black nursing shoes. My wardrobeimpactedmyexperienceinapositiveway.Althoughthiscompanyspokealotaboutself-expressionandinclusion, I did notice that quite a few people who were not dressed professionally were not offered apositiondespitetheirqualifications.Accordingto(McLean,2018),wemakejudgementsabouta person’spersonalityorbehaviorbasedonphysicalcharacteristicsandresearchersarequicktonotethatthosejudgmentsareinaccurate.
