Flower characters are most widely used in taxonomy. Similarities and differences are
equally important.
• The reproductive characters used include the inflorescence, the hypanthium, the
calyx, corolla, stamens, pollen, carpels, ovules, seed and fruit.
• Overemphasis of any of these characters can result in serious errors.
• The broad pattern and structure of fruit and seed is less reliable, but in some
families it may be diagnostic.
