Learning Objectives 1. To explore the etiology, pathogenesis and
pathophysiology of seizures.
2. To explore the clinical symptoms, complications,

Description of the Evolving Case Study:
• Purpose The purpose of the evolving case study is to teach learners
• Identify type learner the etiology, pathogenesis, pathophysiology, clinical
• Concept to be presented symptoms, complications, and management of seizures
The learner is a new registered nurse in a neurology
department. The learner is in a new orientation program.
The fictitious patient will teach the learner the clinical
symptoms, complications, and management of seizures
Description of the Setting: The setting is a neurology floor with ten beds, four
experienced nurses, ten patients, and one new RN nurse
being oriented to work in the neurology department.
Description of Patient
Name John Martin
Gender/Age/Weight/Height Male; 19 years; 152.0 lb (68.9 kg); 69.5" (176.5 cm)
Allergies Alcohol, bright and flashing lights
Past medical history No past medical history
History of present illness The patient began having sudden seizures in the past 14
days. Each episode lasts about 5 minutes, then the patient
regains consciousness.
Social history The patient has withdrawn from friends and social circle in
the past two weeks
Primary medical diagnosis Possible epilepsy diagnosis
Surgeries and/or procedures with dates No past medical surgeries
Report that Learners receive to prior start of the Evolving Case Study using SBAR Format
