Concept Definition
Affirmative consent Yes means yes. Both parties must consciously, voluntarily and
affirmatively agree to engage in the sexual act. Nonconsent is
assumed until someone expresses that they want to engage. AC
is something to be practiced throughout the sexual act and it
can be revoked at any time by any party.
Attachment Fertility Theory The basic human mating strategy of men and women alike,
(AFT) consists of the desire to mate with a single sex partner for life.
Attachment Theory Adolescents construct working models of attachment, or mental
representations of the self, and relationships, based on their
relationship with their parents they use these working models
to construct their later relationships with romantic partners
Blatant prejudice Characterized by explicit hostile attitudes and emotions (e.g.,
hate) toward sexual and gender minorities
Central feedback (women) Women have the tendency to describe arousal by the subjective

Cultivation theory Explains how media affect the sexual beliefs/attitudes of youth.

Descriptive norms What adolescents think about the behavior of their peers –
perceptions of what peers do
Developmental tasks theory States that favorable completion of developmental tasks of a
given stage is likewise a prerequisite for the success in
subsequent stages.
Differential susceptibility media Emphasizes the active role of young people in the selection of
effects model (DSMM) and interaction with media content, but not only person and
developmental factors but also social factors influence media
use as well as the effect of media use (moderators). Implies that
the effects of media on individuals’ attitudes/behaviors/well-
being are mediated by cognitive, emotional and excitative
response states.

Essentialists Believe that certain phenomena are natural, inevitable and
biologically determined (biological, evolutionary, genetic)

Evolutionary theories Interpret human sexual response as relation to deep-seated
drives for survival of the species. “It’s all in your genes”.
Female genital Involves the partial or total removal of, or injury to, the female
mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) external genital tissue for non-therapeutic purposes
Fixation (freud, psychoanalytic) Psychological conflicts arise from failure to satisfy or to express
specific wishes during childhood. Sexualized impulses may be so
frustrated that the person continues to seek gratification of
those wishes in later stages.
Gender Schema Theory Complements social learning theory with an emphasis on
cognitive knowledge frameworks and learning processes. The
whole of what we imagine about men and women (gender
schemas) mainly steers our perception of them.
Group-specific processes Processes that apply to seual minorities. There are 2 types of
