Aperçu du contenu

ONE (introduction)
⬧ Patricia and Richard (he has dementia) Wiley have sold their farm, Dwaleni, to
developers and are moving to Durban with their servants, Beauty and Bheki.
⬧ Beauty cares for Richard and there is an innuendo that he is sexually promiscuous.
⬧ Patricia visits John Ford a retired headmaster and her lover of thirty years
⬧ The visit is strained and he gives her a letter to read once she is in Durban
⬧ Beauty is packing and steals a cup which Patricia once loved. It emerges that she has
unrequited love for Bheki - who has a deaf child.
⬧ Richard wants to dig up the Wileys' dead daughter Rachel.
⬧ Patricia recalls her initial connection with Richard - when they went to Sheffield Beach.
⬧ Looksmart returns to the farm to confront Patricia on her final night there.

TWO (rising action)

⬧ Richard is confused and looks for the farm animals in vain. He "hears" Rachel calling to
him.
⬧ Beauty has been sent to look for Richard.
⬧ Looksmart is shocked at Patricia's appearance and recalls how she loved it when he
used to visit her.
⬧ Looksmart is deliberately rude to Patricia and says he does not recall catching his first
fish with her.
⬧ Beauty hears Looksmart in the house and his presence makes her feel ill.
⬧ Patricia tells Looksmart about Richard and the sale of the farm. Patricia recognises
that she feels lost.
⬧ Beauty enlists Bheki's help to find Richard who must be kept away from Looksmart, so
she instructs him to bring Richard to her room when he finds him
⬧ Looksmart goads Patricia. He seems to resent that she once owned more than he did.
He tells her she needs to fear the truth.
⬧ Patricia recalls the horrific death of a school friend, Fiona Johnson, in a farm attack.
⬧ Looksmart wants tea. Patricia summons Beauty politely and Looksmart insists that she
call her as she usually does - like a dog
⬧ Looksmart is scornful of Beauty and the fact that she stayed on the farm.
⬧ He hints to Patricia that Grace, Beauty's sister, was murdered.

, THREE (climax)

⬧ Patricia went to assist Looksmart's mother the night he was born.
⬧ She loved the child and visited him daily.
⬧ In the present, Richard thinks he has found the house, but he has stumbled upon one
of the many houses under construction. He wonders where the roof is and thinks he
may be dead.
⬧ Beauty senses hostility between Patricia and Looksmart whom she wants to avoid.
⬧ Looksmart insists that Beauty serve him tea, which she does reluctantly.
⬧ Looksmart brings up the day that Grace died. She was attacked by Richard's dog
⬧ Patricia's attitude and indifference to the attack is what has caused his hatred of her.
⬧ As he remembers the event, Looksmart begins screaming inadvertently.
⬧ Patricia cannot recall Looksmart being there during the attack. She pulled the dog off
Grace.
⬧ Richard refused to put the dog down. He says that Grace provoked it.
⬧ The workers later poisoned the dog, Chloe.
⬧ Patricia realises that Looksmart hoped to marry Grace.
⬧ Looksmart runs from the house thinking that he should not have come as nothing has
changed.
⬧ He encounters Bheki and they speak for a while in English to perhaps establish
Looksmart's superiority) and Looksmart reveals that he is one of the developers of the
land.
⬧ Beauty serves Patricia some soup and says she cannot remember much about Grace's
death.
⬧ Looksmart returns to the house to resume his conversation with Patricia.
⬧ What emerges is that Looksmart cannot forgive Patricia for appearing to worry about
Grace's blood ruining her car seats
⬧ Looksmart drove Grace to the hospital, but she died en route and he left the farm
after the burial
⬧ Patricia recalls her daily visits to see baby Looksmart until his mother indicated her
resistance to this.
⬧ Looksmart reveals that Richard caused the attack on Grace: Beauty saw Richard raping
Grace in the dairy; Grace broke free; Richard untied Chloe and set her after fleeing
Grace and then he drove away
⬧ Richard is still lost. It is raining and dark. He thinks he is dead and decides to build his
own house out of bricks and mud.
⬧ Patricia remembers Richard's numerous affairs; she says he was too racist to have
intercourse with Grace.
⬧ She cannot recall being worried about her seats
⬧ Looksmart says that he is there because he wants Patricia to understand.
