NATURALISM IN A DOLL’S HOUSE
NATURALISM IN A DOLL’S HOUSE In literature, naturalism is a theory that is used by authors to show how human beings can be studied through their relationships with their surroundings. Because hum an beings are powerless to the natural world, the theory exposes how human beings are affected by the natural surroundings of their society and how they adapt. Often the characters in these literal works are often fighting for their survival in the natural environment that has been set up by societies expectations. Therefore, naturalism shows how human beings are dictated by their actions and the existing environment. It is only the strongest that are able to survive in the natural society, Author, Henrik Ibsen, through his novel A Doll’s House, demonstrates the theory through different characters. The character that stands out the most is the character of Nora and this is demonstrated through the conversation with different characters in the play. In Nora’s line, she is seen as a very submissive women towards her husband Torvald. It seems that she understands the importance of her submissiveness because it is the only way she can get her husband to cater to her financial needs. The society has created an expectation that she has not live by; she has to be submissive and respectful to her husband, and for her she knows that she has to live by the rules. Her actions therefore show that there is naturalism that dictates how women should address their husbands. Show Less
