YEAR ASSIGNMENT 2

1. Content of the dance report

Introduction

I have chosen to watch Riverdance, a 1995 performance
that took place in Dublin, Ireland. It premiered at the Point
Theatre on 9 February 1995 and starred Michael Flatley and
champion Irish dancer Jean Butler. The music was
composed by Bill Whelan. The show ran for five weeks and
was completely sold out.

When I started this assignment, Riverdance was actually
the first thing that came to mind. I don't know much about
dance, but I knew this one. Personally, I think it is one of
the most beautiful dances and it is very impressive how
everything is so synchronised. I am often not interested in
dance, but I find this really art. My expectations were
therefore reasonably high, although I must admit that I had
seen a bit of it before.

Analysis

I did not know the dancers by name, so they are unknown to me. As I have
already mentioned, I have been in contact with this dance, not that I have ever
done it myself, but I have watched it before.

The choreographer of this impressive dance piece is
Michael Ryan Flatley. He was born in Chicago on 16 July
1958. So he was born in the USA but is an Irish dancer and
choreographer. He is known for Riverdance and Lord of the
Dance.

His first breakthrough came when he joined The Chieftains
in the 1980s. He created the first choreography for
Riverdance and, together with dancer Jean Butler, made a
great success of the interval performance of the Eurovision
Song Contest on 30 April 1994. Flatley and Butler then played the lead roles in a
full-fledged show developed from that short performance. After leaving
Riverdance due to disagreements, Flatley created his own show called Lord of the
Dance. In 1998, Flatley produced a dance show called Feet of Flames, which
toured Europe and the United States in 2000 and 2001.

Flatley received the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment
for the Arts in 1988.
