= subject = the agent
=> active => passive

The subject (onderwerp) of the active sentence becomes the agent (handelend voorwerp) of the passive
sentence. The agent is always preceded by the preposition ‘by’.

Rebecca sent the financial results last night. The financial results were sent by Rebecca last night.
= the object = the subject
=> active => passive

The object (lijdend voorwerp) of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence.

The tenses :

When should we use the passive?

1) When we want to change the focus of the sentence
2) When who or what causes the cation is unknown or unimportant or obvious or ‘people in general’
3) In factual or scientific writing
4) In formal writing instead of using someone / people / they
5) In order to put the new information at the end of the sentence to improve style
6) When the subject is very long
