A1: How well does the company’s code of ethics address CSR?

Analyzing Target’s code of ethics to determine how well they address the area of corporate social

responsibility proved to be pretty easy. The company places value in areas that demonstrate

responsibility in this area. Specifically, they address areas in terms of diversity, non-discrimination,

respecting others, and health/safety. Throughout the code of ethics honesty and trust are mentioned

continuously. Both of these traits are respectable and enforce the idea that Target places factors to

maintain Corporate Social Responsibility. When considering the community, the code of ethics,

addresses investing, respecting human rights and caring for the planet.


A2: Code of Ethics with Legal Mandate

By complying with financial, environmental and business laws target is maintaining the legality of the

company. Target shows accurate financial information by following all Security & Exchange Commision

regulations. The code of ethics addresses providing accurate financial statements, preventing bribery,

avoiding money laundering, and accurate time card reporting. To comply with anti-bribery laws

employees are never to authorize or offer to pay a bribe. Employees are also trained to recognize the

, many forms of a bribe. Target complies with all anti-laundering rules by training employees to recognize

and report suspected money laundering. Target employees are trained for accurate time card reporting

to prevent time card abuse and errors.


A2A: Ramifications for failure to follow legal mandates


If a company were to be found out of compliance for follow certain legal mandates there are several

ramifications that can be invoked. If a company is found to be operating unethically there is potential

that they could be charged a fine. If found to be doing business with a company that operates

unethically it can also have an impact on the company even if they are not the ones operating in an

unethical fashion. Operating or working with a business in which unethical practices are known can have

disastrous effects to the company’s reputation and profits.


A2B: Two policies to ensure Ethical Compliance


When considering this while reviewing the Code of Ethics, two areas stuck out the most. One of the

most important policies focuses on communication. Effective communication can be an important step

in maintaining compliance. It is important for management to demonstrate ethical behavior, modeling

values and demonstrating good ethical choices daily. Along the same lines, management has an open-

door policy. Meaning employees are encouraged to voice concerns, ask of guidance or just need to talk.

Another way that Target ensures ethical compliance is by staying alert and taking action. Employees are

encouraged to watch for violations and bring them to the attention of management. If a violation or

potential violation is identified swift action is taken.


A3: Ethical Culture


Target uses their Ethical Code to set the tone for Ethical culture in several ways. One that stood out

was something they noted as the inclusion acumen. This ensures that all employees and consumers feel

that they are welcome and valued by the corporation. Another area that seemed noteworthy was the

value that Target places on inclusion and equality. The corporation makes sure everyone has access to
