Drie strategieën om publieke stigmatisering te voorkomen:
1. Protesteren. Leidt vooral tot gedragsverandering en niet tot attitudeverandering.
2. Bevorderen van contact, waardoor stereotype opvattingen worden ontkracht. Leidt niet
altijd tot stigmareductie, maar iemand wordt als uitzondering gezien. Heeft het meeste
effect als deze patiënt in lichte mate het stereotype beeld ontkracht.
3. Voorlichting geven. Je bereikt hiermee vooral de mensen die het er toch al mee eens zijn.
