Meningitis- Module 7
• Inflammation of the meninges of the brain from a pathogen entering CNS
• Major complications include hydrocephalus, vision and hearing loss, delayed growth and
development and seizures
• Vaccinate with meningococcal vaccine at 11 or 12 yrs
Lead Exposure- Module 4
• GI tract is major route of absorption (diet high in fat and low in Fe and Ca increases lead
absorption)
• Serum lead level > or = 5 mcg/L is considered harmful
• Irritability, lethargy, hyperactivity, cognitive and perceptual motor difficulties,
clumsiness, seizures, coma and death (>100 mg/dL)
Health Promotion Preschoolers- Module 1
• Ritualistic techniques and transition objects help decrease bedtime resistance
• Little understanding of the reason for a rule, when it comes to discipline…time-out, time-
in, restricted choices, diversion
• Teach fire safety- 2 exits, crawl under smoke, never go back into house
Hospitalization, Illness and Play: Play Activities for a Preschooler- Module 2
• Play can be more argumentative and less generous
• Safe place/playroom where procedures do not take place
• Emotional outlet play/dramatic play- child acts out or dramatizes real life stressors
, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)- Module 3
• No tx, only prevention: prone sleeping, no bed sharing, no soft mattresses (only firm), no
sleeping on furniture or adult mattress
• Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke
• Pacifier for sleep (once breastfeeding has been established for a few weeks)
Scoliosis- Module 5
• Girls screened 2x at ages 10 and 12, boys screened 1x at 13-14 yrs
• Lateral curvature of spine, rib hump when bending forward, asymmetrical rib cage,
uneven shoulder or pelvic height, leg length discrepancy
• Tx with brace for 22-23 hr/day or surgery for curvatures 40-50o
Hospitalization, Illness and Play: Preschooler’s Understanding of Time- Module 2
• Introduce preop teaching a few hours before surgery; give some choice and control, while
keeping boundaries around tx
• Boundaries between reality and fantasy blur
• Leave invasive procedures for the end of the exam
Dermatitis and Acne- Module 6
• Most kids with atopic dermatitis have a FHx of asthma, hay fever or atopic dermatitis
• Antibiotics for dermatitis patients to tx secondary infections
• Two forms of birth control for females treating acne with isotretinoin (teratogenic med)

• IPV #4 and DTaP #5
• MMR #2 and Varicella #2
• Influenza vaccine annually
