INC3701 - Inclusive Education
Assignment 6 (PORTFOLIO)
DUE 29 September 2025
TASK 1
Critically analyse the teacher's question in the image: "Are my learners struggling
to learn or am I struggling to teach?"
The teacher’s question reflects deep professional awareness and the importance of
self-reflection in teaching. It encourages educators to consider the learning process
from multiple angles rather than attributing difficulties solely to the learners. Learners’
struggles can stem from a range of factors. Cognitive challenges, such as limited prior
knowledge or difficulties with memory, can impede understanding (Florian, 2014). For
example, if learners have gaps in foundational mathematics, they may struggle to solve
higher-level problems, not because they are incapable, but because prior knowledge
was insufficient.
Social and emotional factors also play a critical role. Learners who face stress, low self-
esteem, or lack of parental support may struggle to focus or engage in class activities
(Hattie, 2009). For instance, a learner from a low socio-economic background may not
have access to study materials or quiet spaces, making it harder to keep up with
lessons. Teachers who are unaware of these challenges may misinterpret the learner’s
performance as laziness or lack of interest.
Teachers’ attitudes, teaching styles, and classroom management also influence
learning. Rigid, lecture-focused methods may not cater to diverse learning needs, while
