1. Define sovereignty and explain how it is threatened in our globalized world. -
ANSWER ✓ o SOVEREIGNTY - Each national government has the right to
govern its people as it wishes, without interference from other nations.

, o If the majority of nations thinks a country is being ruled unethically or crimes on
its citizens are happening, world sanctions can be ordered. IE... Libya and
Moammar Gadhafi.
o Consider the international community's concern with former Libyan dictator
Moammar Gadhafi's military repression of political protests in 2011. His actions
prompted the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to establish a no-fly
zone over Libya, shooting down Libyan planes and destroying Gadhafi's armor
units. Ignoring Gadhafi's claims that NATO blatantly violated Libya's sovereignty,
the International Criminal Court issued warrants for the arrest of Gadhafi, his son,

2. Explain the three fundamental values of American democracy. - ANSWER ✓ •
Order, freedom and equality.
• Freedom vs. Order- sometimes, order is needed to have freedoms. USSR,
Germany.
• Freedom vs. Equality- sometimes, equality is a problem and hurts freedom. Equal
pay, School busing.
• The terms freedom, order, and equality have varied connotations in American
politics. Freedom andequality are positive terms that mean different things to
different people at different times. Orderhas negative connotations for many
because it symbolizes government intrusion into private lives.
• Freedom can be used in two major senses: freedom of and freedom from. We use
it in the "freedom of" sense. Freedom of speech means freedom to speak.
• Order in politics means more than preserving life and property; it also means
established patterns of authority in society and traditional modes of behavior.
• Equality in politics can be viewed narrowly as political equality (each person
having one vote) or as social equality (equality in wealth, education, and status). It
can also be viewed as equality of opportunity or of outcome.

How are thesefundemental values depicted in the two dilemmas of government? -
ANSWER ✓ The conflict between the values of freedom and order represents the
original dilemma of government.
