Burns - ANS-First degree: red, painful, no blisters
Second degree: epidermis and dermis affected, same as first degree but with blisters and
swelling
Third degree: below dermis to nerves and deep layers, blackened and charred
Caused by: dry heat, moist heat, chemicals, electricity, radiation, careless smoking
When emergency help is required: burns on face, head, neck, hands, feet, genitals, over a
large body area (greater than 75%), under age 2 or over age 50, size and depth of burn
Carbon monoxide poisoning - ANS-colourless, odourless, tasteless gas produced by
common household appliance or fireplace
Symptoms: nausea, headache, fatigue
Causes of falls - ANS-poor lighting, clutter, wet and slippery areas, rushing to bathroom
Classes of WHMIS - ANS-Class A - compressed gas
Material that is combustible and flammable (Class B) Class C: Material that oxidizes Class
D - posonous and infectious material (3 divisions)
Class E - corrosive material
Class F - dangerously reactive material
Complications of restraints - ANS-injuries from client trying to get free or from the wrong
restraint being used or the right restraint but it was applied incorrectly
death from strangulation
affects dignity and self-esteem
Anger, agitation, depression, humiliation, mistrust, and embarrassment Define restraint -
ANS-any device, garment, barrier, furniture, or medication that limits or restricts freedom of
movement or access to one's body

- check every 15 mins, reposition at least every 2 hrs
Employee's Responsibilities - ANS-follow all safety policies and procedures, use
recommended protective equipment, report all safety hazards and concerns, complete
incident or occurrence report, refuse unsafe work as long as does not endanger the client
Employer's Responsibilities - ANS-write policies that promote safety, train and educate
employees about policies, create health and safety committee, respond to reports of
workplace hazards, report all accidents, have all necessary equipment available
